THE COLONY, TX, June 20, 2006 - An extended family reunion kicked off the dedication for the Spencer House on May 13, 2006. The Billingsley Company and relatives of the Spencer family celebrated in unison when the doors were opened to the renovated 100 year-old-home. Originally the house was constructed in Lewisville, but after years of neglect and poor location city council members began to search for a company to sponsor the home's growing repair list. In 2004 Lucy Billingsley shared her vision with council members to relocate the house to the community of Austin Ranch and renovate it into an extended stay hotel for travelers or events. Billingsley believed the structure could be redesigned without destroying or changing the unique historical characteristics of the structure.
Two years and nearly a million dollars later in remodeling improvements, members of the Spencer family, residents of Austin Ranch, community leaders, the press and staff from the Billingsley Company were invited to view the home's updates in person. Relatives arrived eager to view the home that had impacted their childhood. Family member Don Spencer Epperson was impressed by Billingsley's vision. "The Spencer House dedication was a time that will remain a very important lifetime event for me and my family. The consultants and contractors did an incredible job in the restoration and furnishing of the home. Lucy Billingsley far exceeded any expectations that I had. The quality and workmanship is flawless, and the home is so much better today than it ever was before," said Epperson.
Family members spent the afternoon touring the house and reliving old memories. Stories and laughter were exchanged with the discovery of each artifact that remained intact, which ranged from original light fixtures and hardwood floors to an iron claw bathtub.
Many relatives extended their window into the past by spending the night at the home, eager to be the first guests at the house in it's new location.
Historically the home has the potential to significantly impact residents of The Colony by reconnecting their Texas roots. "Lucy Billingsley stepped up to the plate and preserved a piece of Texas heritage for all of us to enjoy. The condition of the Spencer home is better than it ever was before. We are pleased it is in our community and that it will have an impact on future generations as a bridge between old and new," said Mayor John Dillard.
